 Student Events

The Merced County Office of Education is proud of our countywide Student Events Program.  County school districts and community organizations partner with the Merced County Office of Education to coordinate or sponsor our student events throughout the year.  Our events are designed to encourage achievement among TK through 12th grade students.  More than 12,000 students competed or participated in our 2015-2016 events that ranged from a Children's Opera, Speech and Writing Festivals to the Academic Pentathlon and Decathlon.  We are very excited to add some additional opportunities to our students with new events for 2016-2017.  These new events will help showcase our students in even more ways than before.  Some of our local competition winners have the opportunity to compete in state championships, opening a whole new world of exciting possibilities for them.

We would like to give a special acknowledgment to our sponsors, volunteers, teachers and coaches for their commitment and encouragement to our children and for supporting the Merced County Office of Education's Student Events.

Contact our office for all of your student event questions.  We are here to help!

UC Merced Opera for Children (TK-5)
There's a Martian in the Opera House!

The creative lyrics and story of There's a Martian in the Opera House! were penned by author Nancy Steel Brokaw and are set to the music of some of the world's greatest opera and classical music composers. In this year's children's opera, Unda, a Martian Crater Girl escapes the drudgery of mining on Mars by stowing away on a space rover belonging to the Evil Maximillian Snaptrap. As the show opens, Snaptrap snatches Unda as she sneaks out of his company's space rover and quickly makes a plan to sell her to the highest bidder. Unda escapes and hides in the Metropolis Opera House where Tommy Tenderheart befriends her. Everything comes to a riotous, operatic conclusion onstage at the Opera House.
